WP1: Management of the Consortium
Provides the consortium/financial management required by the Commission. The proposal is submitted and co-ordinated by the Species 2000 Secretariat, with support by the University of Reading Research Enterprise Services, and, if successful, will be handled in the same way as the FP5 EuroCat project and the FP7 4D4Life project.View full Work Package description -
WP2: Integration of the Virtual Research Community
This is the main networking and integration group for planning, designing, monitoring, agreeing, testing and certificating the pipelines and indexing work across the major programme partners in the project. (1 full time bioinformatician employee based at Reading, and able to engage with, and answerable to, all the major programme partners, 1 employee at Paris for the last 18 months, to work with the GSD Network of Sp2000).View full Work Package description -
WP3: Catalogue of Life Production Service
A small team at Reading and the Sp2000 office in the Philippines presently provides the continuing editorial, production and public systems service that synthesises the Catalogue of Life using the harvested and peer-reviewed content that is provided by a rising set of over 70 supplier Global Species databases around the world. For the first 18 months of i4Life, this project will use the service already funded by the EC through the 4D4Life project. This present project will then fund the continuation of that service for months 19 – 36.View full Work Package description -
WP4: Catalogue of Life Software Support & Development Service
ETI Bioinformatics presently provides the ongoing maintenance and production solidification of existing and new softwares for the CoL. This Support Service is already funded by the EC through the 4D4Life project for months 1 – 18. This present project will then fund the continuation of that service, including the maintenance of existing systems, and the production solidification of the new tools created in WP11 and WP12 of this project.View full Work Package description -
WP5: Species 2000 taxonomic expert array
Species 2000 is the principal organiser of the Species 2000 GSD Network, in which the custodians of Global Species Databases, and in some cases their panels of contributors provide the expert taxonomic opinions that provide the taxonomic view propagated by the Catalogue of Life as its preferred view. In this project it is proposed that the new Piping System (WP12) will enable pilot batches of names and taxa to be piped to GSDs in the array for their experts to research, assess and then process the taxonomic position of the incoming names and taxa, so that these taxonomnic enhancements are incorporated in subsequent harvests of their taxonomies.View full Work Package description -
WP6: GBIF Pipeline GNA and GSD-Piping
Design, test, implement a pipeline for transmitting CoL updates to GBIF, and GBIF additional name and taxon sets to CoL. Also focus on CoL insertion and linkage to the Global Names Index part of the Global Names Architecture in which GBIF and CoL are partners with others.View full Work Package description -
WP7: EBI Pipeline, Cross-map and GSD-Piping
Design, test and implement a pipeline for transmitting CoL updates to EBI, EBI/NCBI additional name and taxon sets to CoL. Also design, test and implement a regular crossmapping process between the CoL taxonomy and the NCBI taxonomy done at EBI, using the CoL cross-mapping tools of WP11, and installing a new cross-mapping/toggling view between the two taxonomies within the EBI system.View full Work Package description -
WP8: Barcode Pipeline, Cross-map and GSD-Piping

WP9: IUCN Red List Pipeline, Cross-map and GSD-Piping
Design, test, implement a pipeline for transmitting CoL updates to IUCN, and IUCN additional name and taxon sets to CoL. Design, test, implement a regular cross-mapping process between the CoL taxonomy and the RedLists taxonomy done at IUCN, using the CoL cross-mapping tools of WP11, and installing a new cross-mapping/toggling view between the two taxonomies within the SiS system.View full Work Package description -
WP10: Lifewatch Pipeline
Design, test, implement a pipeline for transmitting CoL and CoL updates to the EDIT cyberplatform in anticipation of the EDIT cyberplatform becoming a component of the LifeWatch virtual laboratory, and additional name and taxon sets from the EDIT cyberplatform to the CoL.View full Work Package description -
WP11: CoL Cross-map Service
This tool will initially be used to provide a CoL crossmapping service to which other taxonomies can be provided for cross-mapping against particular instances of the CoL taxonomy. Output from the service will be an annotated crossmap between the two taxonomies. This cross-map can be used to support user interfaces which show the relationships between the taxonomies and allow users to switch between them.View full Work Package description -
WP12: CoL GSD Piping Service
To prototype, make available for test, and implement Taxon & Name Placement Service components for ongoing usage in collaboration with WP 2. This part will use a CoL Reception Buffer that will either contain or be linked to a Name Index that will use the Name Index structure under discussion in the Global Names Architecture (GNA) group and worked on by partners in EoL and GBIF.View full Work Package description
